How To

How to drive a nail through wood

First, choose the right size and type of tool to drive a nail through wood. The most commonly used types of Hammers are claw hammers. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A claw hammer is best for hitting nails or hard objects. However, it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where the blow will land. The sledgehammer works well for large areas, but is too heavy for smaller tasks.

After choosing the right hammer, place your hand flat against the side of the head so that the handle rests comfortably in your palm. You can grip the handle with your fingers, but not so tight that it causes injury. Your wrist should be relaxed while you hold the hammer straight upwards. Next, swing the hammer toward the ground and aim for the nail's center. The impact of the hammer hitting the nail should be felt. Practice swinging your hammer on a block of wooden until you feel comfortable.

The hammer should be held close to your body when you are ready to begin driving the nail. The nail should be perpendicular to wood's surface. Keep your eyes focused directly on the tip of the nail. Move the hammer forward and then continue to move the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. Once you have mastered this technique, increase the power of your swings. Hold the hammer high above your shoulders and pull it down. This will help you put more energy behind each of your moves.

Once you have made the first hole, remove your hammer. Use a pry bar or screwdriver to pull out the rest of the nails. To avoid splitting the wood, make sure the nail heads are not touching the board's surface.
