Chainsaw Wood Carving

woodworking tool making

The art of chainsaw wood carving is an art form that many artists are beginning to explore. The art is a natural extension their skill set. It often includes a combination traditional carving techniques and contemporary designs. Crager and Tracie Dugas, his wife, have been creating beautiful wood carvings since the 1960s. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters also help with some of his staining and painting projects. They also prefer white pine as it is lighter in weight and less likely crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson, a chainsaw wood carver from Reedsport in Oregon, is Rich Anderson. He is a native of Poughkeepsie and lives with his wife and son. Anderson has several degrees from the Fine Arts Department and teaches art to children from Pre-K through Fifth Grade. Anderson has created many sculptures on Long Island, and even one in Colorado. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently completing a sign design for Youngs Farm Riverhead.

He can create stunning sculptures with a $400 chainsaw that is much faster than it would take to cut a tree. The chainsaw wood carving process is more sustainable than hammers or chisels because it can be recycled. Anderson is a word-of mouth marketer and has carved a large cobra and a great Blue Heron for Wading Water's mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

Tracie Dugas has created a life-size Wizard from wood. This is a great example of her skill as an expert chainsaw wood carver. The 49-year-old woman lives in Clare (Nova Scotia), between Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw wood carver, was among many artists who showed their work during Canada Day weekend in Sydney. While the Sydney waterfront was overflowing with tourists, it provided an opportunity for locals and visitors to enjoy the waterfront as well as a chance to catch a glimpse at the chainsaw carver.

Tim Crager

Tim Crager, while he didn't consider him an artist and wasn't very skilled with a saw chainsaw, turned his passion into a full time career in carving six years back. Crager has been traveling the Eastern U.S. selling over $1 million worth carvings since that time. Crager was born in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. He grew up watching the chainsaw wood carver at his work. He was captivated by the artist's work and called his boss to give him his notice for two weeks.

Crager chooses white pine for its versatility and availability from tree trimming companies. Many people prefer different types of wood. Crager is a follower of the grain and allows the saw to guide his creations. Crager may know exactly what he's making before he starts any project. However, he often changes his mind mid-project. A small project can be done in an hour, while a large one may take 33 to 35 hours.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins works as a chainsaw-woodcarver. His wood carvings are intricate and often feature many animals. His creations have attracted attention from tourists and neighbors alike. Blue Arrow Farm's coffee shop and entrance are graced with the chainsaw sculptures. Blue Arrow Farm is owned by Don Oriolo, who is also the manager and artist of Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s husband, met while participating in a New Jersey State Fair competition for chainsaws.

The 15-year-old wood carver and winner of the award was inspired to start carving at a Reedsport competition. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. His carvings now feature an otter, mother bear and squirrel looking out of a tree. He is now ready to compete in National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

How much money does a hobbyist have to put into getting started?

To start your own woodworking company, you will likely need capital to purchase the necessary tools and other supplies. The best place to start is by buying a small drill press, circularsaw, circular saw or sanding machine. These items are affordable so you won’t break the bank.

Is it hard to start my own woodworking business?

It's not easy to start your own woodworking business. You will need to adhere to many legal requirements. But, this doesn't mean you need to go through all of the trouble of setting up your business. Many people join already-established businesses. This allows you to join existing businesses and pay only membership fees.

How often should I purchase new supplies?

Which wooden products are most popular?

Most wooden items that are best-sellers are made from wood harvested sustainably.

The most used wood types for furniture are oak, maple and walnut.

These woods are extremely strong but also have beautiful colors and grain patterns. If they are well cared for, they can last many years.

To protect wooden furniture from moisture damage, you should paint it first. This covers all surfaces, drawers included, as well as doors and handles.

A paint that resists water is the best choice to ensure that furniture lasts a long time.

A high-quality oil-based primer should be used, followed by two coats with top coat. You may need to apply several coats of top coat depending on how much wear it is expected.

Spray cans and aerosol spray paints are not recommended. These products have solvents that evaporate quickly, leaving behind dangerous fumes.

How To

How to stain wooden surfaces

The process of staining wood involves the application of chemicals to the wood's surface, which causes it to change its color. This chemical reaction causes wood to turn from whiteish to brownish. Although oak is the most popular type of wood to stain, there are many other types that can be used.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. It is possible to mix stain into varnishes and paints, making it part of the finishing coat.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. Cleaning the wood thoroughly removes any dirt or grease that could interfere with applying the stain. Sanding the wood removes scratches and imperfections. The next step is to determine the type of stain you would like to use. Penetrating stains are different from non-penetrating. Penetrating stain penetrates deeper into wood than nonpenetrating, making them suitable for dark colors like mahogany. Light colors such as maple work well with non-penetrating stain.

Once you have decided on the stain type that you want, get your tools ready. You can use a paintbrush to apply stains. This allows you spread the liquid evenly over the surface. You should also have some handy rags to wipe up excess stains after you finish painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared your materials, clean the area you intend to stain. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. If you intend to stain darker wood, make sure you get rid of any debris.

The stain should be applied next. Next, apply the stain to the furniture by starting at one end. Work slowly and carefully, moving back and forth along the grain of the wood until you reach the opposite end. The stain should not drip off of the wood's edge. Before moving on to the next steps, allow the stain drying completely.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
